Spain and China have reached a new agreement on pork exports
On 14 April, during Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s visit to China, Spain and China reached a number of agricultural and food cooperation agreements, two of which are directly related to the pork industry: firstly, the signing of an agreement on the export of processed animal protein; and secondly, the revision of the existing pork export agreement to include cooked pork products within the scope of exports to China. The Spanish government also noted that the two sides had made progress towards opening up the market for fertilisers derived from animal protein.

From an industry perspective, the focus of this new round of agreements lies in further expanding the range of export categories within the pork industry chain, moving beyond traditional trade in fresh and frozen meat to encompass processed products and the comprehensive utilisation of by-products. This implies that Spanish companies with heat treatment and deep processing capabilities are likely to gain greater access to the Chinese market in the future.

China has long been a key market for Spanish pork exports. Official Spanish data shows that in 2024, the value of Spanish pork exports to China reached €571 million. This agreement is not the first expansion of market access; as early as 2018, both China and Spain had already facilitated exports of fresh and chilled pork, as well as various cured and matured pork products, to China. This latest move to further open the market to processed products demonstrates that cooperation between the two sides continues to deepen towards higher value-added products.
