A key milestone has been reached in the commercialization of African swine fever (ASF) vaccines in South Korea. According to publicly available information, the Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency of South Korea approved “export-only” product licenses for two ASF vaccines in April 2026: SuiShot ASF-X from the Central Vaccine Research Institute (CAVAC) and PRO-VAC ASF from Komipharm. This means South Korea has become the second country, following Vietnam, to grant approval for ASF vaccines; however, both products are currently intended for export only and are not being promoted for domestic use in South Korea.
CAVAC’s SuiShot ASF-X was developed based on the South Korean wild boar isolate ASFV-MEC-01 and is positioned as a live attenuated vaccine targeting ASF genotype II. It is suitable for piglets, gilts, and sows, with a vaccination regimen of two 2-ml intramuscular injections administered approximately three weeks apart. CAVAC is currently pursuing registration in Vietnam and the Philippines; whether it obtains local market approval in the coming months will be key to the product’s successful commercialization.
Another approved product is Komipharm’s PRO-VAC ASF. This vaccine uses the USDA-sourced ASFV-G-ΔI177L/ΔLVR vaccine strain and is primarily intended for 4–6-week-old piglets; publicly available information indicates that the vaccination regimen consists of a 1-ml intramuscular injection. Komipharm emphasizes that it has completed multiple rounds of safety and efficacy trials and is currently conducting field trials in the Philippines and Vietnam. Unlike CAVAC, which has opted for local contract manufacturing in Vietnam, Komipharm relies more heavily on production support from the BL3 facility at the Korea Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency.
In addition to the two products mentioned above that have already obtained export licenses, the live attenuated ASF vaccine jointly developed by South Korea’s CareSide and Spain’s CSIC is also worth noting. This project utilizes a triple-gene-deleted candidate strain, with the technical focus on reducing the risk of reversion to virulence and exploring its ability to counter ASF genotype I/II hybrid or variant strains. Public information indicates that CareSide has established a partnership with NAVETCO, a state-owned animal vaccine company in Vietnam. The plan is to transfer the candidate strain and production technology to NAVETCO, which will manufacture vaccines for clinical trials at its GMP facilities in Vietnam and advance local preclinical trials and subsequent registration. The project aims to complete local product licensing in Vietnam and launch commercial production around 2027; however, there is currently no public evidence that it has obtained an export license from South Korea.
